Tottenham Hotspur History
Tottenham Hotspurs were founded in 1892 and they won the FA Cup for the first time in 1901 when they were still a non-league club, the only side ever to do so since the formation of the Football League.
Tottenham's success on the field came mostly prior to the formation of the Premier League, winning two Division One titles, eight FA cups, two League Cups and three European trophies - two UEFA Cups and a Cup-Winners' Cup. The legend that is Jimmy Greaves is their top all-time scorer with 268 goals in 381 appearances between 1961 and 1970.
Since the introduction of the Premier League in 1992 Tottenham have had limited success, winning just two League Cups, in 1999 and 2008; this is not surprising really as during that time they have had 13 managers and 5 caretaker managers.
Tottenham Hotspurs hold the record for the fastest Premiership goal, scored by the injury prone Ledley King after 9.9 seconds in a 3-3 draw with Bradford City in 2000. Another Spurs favourite, Les Ferdinand netted the Premiership's 10,000th goal in 2001 during their 4-0 win over Fulham.
Just before the start of the 2013-14 season Tottenham sold their prized asset Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for £85 million and the manager Andre Villas-Boas reinvested the money in seven new signings; the team didn't gel quickly enough and Villas-Boas was sacked in the middle of the season.
Tim Sherwood was appointed as caretaker manager until the end of the season and during that time he achieved the highest league win percentage of any manager since 1899 (59%). Despite that, at the end of the season the owners decided not to appoint him on a permanent basis and looked towards the Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino to bring back the flamboyant style of play that they are renowned for, and some trophies.
