About Chelsea FC

Chelsea players have been thrilling their enthusiastic army of fans for around 100 years and have got plenty of silverware to show for it. The trophy cabinets are laden with swag from League Championships, FA Cups, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup Winners Cup – they’ve also done the double on numerous occasions.

Since the dawn of time . . . well, since 1905 and the dawn of Chelsea Football Club all the home Chelsea fixtures have been played at Stamford Bridge, the home of football in Fulham. The former athletics stadium was bought by Chelsea founder Gus Mears to turn it into a soccer ground. The club was actually formed in the pub opposite what is still the main entrance to the ground. The certainly hit the ground running earning promotion to the first division in only their second season.

It will come as no surprise that the team has been home to many colourful characters over the years. Ruud Gullit was a prolific player in the 1990’s and awarded Player of the Year in 1996 – the Dutchman then hung up his boots for a suit and steered the club to an FA Cup in during his two years as manager 1996 – 1998.

Chelsea football boss Jose Mourinho is another character of note - the most successful foreign manager in English football. After steering The Blues to victory on 7 occasions during his first reign from 2004 – 2007 he returned to the team in 2013. Many fans refer to his return as “The Second Coming” – well, for many people Chelsea is not just football, it’s more like a religion.

The Chelsea football ground regularly attracts more than 40,000 supporters, the atmosphere alive with chanting, singing and cheering for their heroes. The club is also renowned for being one of the most culturally diverse in the UK with a Russian owner Roman Abramovich, the Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho and only a sprinkling of home grown talent playing among a largely international squad.

Chelsea FC best goals ever

It will come as no surprise that Frank Lampard is widely regarded as the greatest player ever seen at Chelsea – according to Bobby Tambling (the previous top goal scorer) and Chelsea Captain John Terry. With so many remarkable goals in his career it’s difficult to pick out the best – he really has saved the day on so many occasions.

The player with the accolade of scoring the most goals for his beloved Chelsea is currently Frank Lampard with an impressive tally of 211 goals scored during his illustrious career, 2001 and 2014 – from a total of 648 games. He is also the clubs most capped player making 103 appearances for the England squad during that time.

The title should however (according to the man himself) go to his second goal against Bolton in April 2005. After picking up the ball on the halfway line he charges towards goal and sticks it into the back of the net. This was the goal which sealed the teams’ first title in 50 long years.
